Here is a guest blog from my friend Maria Viall over at Back to Food
It’s the kick-off week to the holiday season which should mean a lot of holiday cheer and yuletide greetings.
Unfortunately, it is also the season of the Food Pushers. And they are armed and ready.
“But I made it just for you.”
“Aren’t you going to have just a little bit?”
“You have to try this.”
“Are you on some sort of diet?”
One of the biggest concerns people have is feasting as a guest at someone else’s house. You don’t like to be the person who passes on everything due to their “diet restrictions” nor do you enjoy feeling obligated to eat everything being served.
The best tip in being a rockstar guest is to eat only the things that really turn you on. That’s right.
You get all giddy inside thinking about pumpkin pie? Indulge in a sliver. Grandma’s green bean casserole not really doing it for you? Don’t put it on your plate.
When you fill your plate with food that are not only novelties but ones you truly savor, you are honoring your ability to make choices that best serve you and your health goals. This makes you more confident in your decision-making and decreases the feeling that you can’t control yourself around food.
So how do you avoid being a victim of food pushing? I am going to start by saying this:
NEVER GUILT OR BE GUILTED INTO EATING FOOD YOU DON’T WANT OR HAVE ROOM FOR.
Don’t let someone else’s insecurities make you feel obligated to well, oblige to having a piece of apple crisp when you are full. Rather, ask to take some home with you to enjoy later (whether or not you plan to).
This is a win-win solution to avoid being the garbage disposal that everyone shovels their food down while not hurting anyone’s feelings. If you do eat it later…great. If not, take it to work or offer it to someone else who you think may enjoy it. However, I will heed this warning:
MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT IN TURN BECOME THE PUSHER.
