Here at Wild Workouts we talk a lot about the QUALITY of food.
If you are looking to lose weight, gain muscle and perform better at the activities you love, what you eat will play a big part. How much you eat, what time you eat, and what you do not eat are all real factors that should not be ignored. The problem is, most people end up focusing on numbers (calories in/out) rather than simply looking at upgrading the quality of foods they are eating.
The answer is Quality. Calories matter, but focusing on food quality is an equally important part of preventing weight gain and promoting weight loss. When you upgrade the quality of your food, amazing things start to happen. You become satisfied with fewer calories. You have new energy. Sleep gets better. Your moods level out.
High-quality foods include unrefined, minimally processed foods such as vegetables and fruits, whole grains, healthy fats and healthy sources of protein. The hours in between a good meal should leave you feeling energetic and free to be creative, caring, inventive, etc. Not feeling empty, grumpy, bloated and more importantly, still hungry.
Lower-quality foods include highly processed snack foods, sugar-sweetened beverages, refined (white) grains, refined sugar, fried foods, foods high in saturated and trans fats, and high-glycemic foods such as potatoes. Eating fast food, highly processed supermarket food, and cheap meal replacements are almost guaranteed to leave you feeling the negative effects.
Have you ever heard the phrase, “Stuffed yet starved.” When you eat cheap food even if it is 1000 calories, one hour later you will feel like you have not eaten anything at all. Why? Empty calories. The human brain does not recognize most food items when they become altered or denatured. The part of the brain that registered satiety says, “Keep eating” if it has not received nutrients, minerals and vitamins.
The Organic & Grass Fed Difference
Organic meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products come from animals that are given no antibiotics or growth hormones. Organic food is produced without using most conventional pesticides; fertilizers made with synthetic ingredients or sewage sludge; bioengineering; or ionizing radiation.
Research studies consistently show that organic foods have higher nutritional value than conventional food. The reason: In the absence of pesticides and fertilizers, plants boost their production of the phytochemicals (vitamins and antioxidants).
